Privacy Policy
Last updated 1 July 2026
The Perks is operated by Do Stuff Media (“we”, “us”) and helps local businesses offer perks to people in their community. This policy explains what information we collect when you use The Perks, why we collect it, and the choices you have. It applies to residents who claim offers, merchants who run them, and visitors to our site.
How you use The Perks
The Perks reaches you two ways. Mailout offers are public — a business distributes a code or link (for example, by mail), and you claim the offer by giving your name and email; no card, membership, or account is required. Community boardsare private networks (such as a building or club) that you unlock with a one-time code printed on a card; that access is locked to your device and time-limited. The two overlap: someone who received a mailout may also join a community board, and a board member can still claim public mailout offers. We collect similar information either way — the differences are noted below.
Information we collect
- Details you give us. When you claim any offer — mailout or on a board — we collect your name and email address. To unlock a private community board, you also enter the one-time access code printed on your card. Merchants provide business details and an account email and password.
- Claim and usage information. We record which offers you claim and redeem, whether a claim came through a public mailout or a specific community board, and the time it happened.
- Device and approximate location. To stop the same offer being claimed repeatedly and to give merchants basic performance figures, we log the IP address of your request, a derived approximate location (city / region), and a one-way fingerprint computed from your IP address and browser. We do not use precise GPS location.
- Access and sign-in information.Unlocking a community board stores a device token on your device so you don’t have to re-enter your card each visit, and each board has an expiry (a “lease”). Signing in to your saved account uses a magic link; we keep a record of recent sign-ins and the devices linked to your card so you can review and revoke them. Claiming a mailout offer doesn’t require a card or device token.
- On your device. We store small cookies and local values — for example, to remember which offers you’ve claimed and that you are signed in, plus a community board access token when you unlock a board. These are required for the service to work rather than for advertising.
How we use your information
- To deliver the offers and vouchers you claim, and to send the related emails (voucher codes, sign-in links, and redemption receipts).
- To prevent duplicate or fraudulent claims and keep offers fair.
- To give merchants aggregate performance figures for their own campaigns.
- To operate, secure, and improve the service.
What merchants can see
Merchants and administrators can see how their offers performed. Your email address is shown to a merchant only if you choose to share it when claiming; otherwise it is masked. You can change this choice at any time from your profile.
How we share information
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with service providers who help us run The Perks, under agreements that limit their use of it:
- Supabase — database and authentication hosting.
- Vercel — application hosting.
- Resend — sending transactional email.
- ip-api.com — deriving an approximate city/region from an IP address.
We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights, safety, and security of our users and the service.
Retention
We keep your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service, resolve disputes, and meet legal obligations. You can ask us to delete your account and associated personal information at any time.
Your choices and rights
- Access, correct, or update your name, email, and sharing preference from your profile.
- Review recent sign-ins and revoke devices linked to your card.
- Request a copy or deletion of your personal information by contacting us.
Children
The Perks is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “last updated” date above, and material changes will be made prominent where appropriate.
